Often times, when dealing with survey data particularly, the data will need to be adjusted due to differences in magnetic declination. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) provides a good declination calculator on their web site.

In Canada the most pervasive map data available, and the grid system by which many datasets are indexed, is the National Topographic System managed by NRCan. You can find a comprehensive index for 1:2,000,000, 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 map sheets on their web site.

It is impossible to deal with localized data in this day and age without knowing the UTM zone that you are working in. Here we provide a simplified zone map for the user to estimate the zone of interest. We will be adding a dynamic UTM zone calculator that will allow the user to input GCS coordinates and it will return the UTM zone. This tool will be powered by Mapserver and PostGIS and should be available in early Fall 2007.
